Muhammad Ali

Below is the entry I wrote for the Elsie Locke Writing competition. I chose to use Muhammad Ali as my subject because he stood up for civil rights, which is something I care about. While writing I learned the message 'we are all equal'. To me that means skin colour doesn't matter, nationality and race also don't matter, we are all equal because we are human beings.

MUHAMMAD ALI

I am so upset at myself because I didn’t know where my head was, but it was worth it. Finally, here I was in a cold damp bed with people surrounding me with their yellow teeth. They charged me with $10,000 dollars and the boxing association have stripped me of the World Heavyweight Title. This banned me from boxing in the United states. Black Americans also protested their abusers so I did the same.

I was lost in a maze of thoughts that was created by my lack of words to express them. I stood up and grabbed the bars of the jail door angrily.  My brain was frozen from all that thinking. So I decided to talk to the criminals behind the bars in the other cells.

“Can I ask you all a question? Well why are you all, in here?” I said with a nervous tone.

As I waited for someone to speak, I sat back down. There was silence, but the silence faded away when news reporters came rushing in to talk to the greatest boxer in the world.

“Muhammad, why did you refuse to go and fight for America?” asked a reporter.

“The reason why I am stuck behind these old bars is because I stood up for civil rights, I did not want to drop bombs or shoot sharp bullets at innocent people who have done nothing wrong to me or this country, I did not want to put on a uniform and travel 10,000 miles from home to see dead people on the ground and kill those who have children waiting for them.”  

The news reporters left, and I was still here, alone with no friends. I heard voices in my head and they told to me to not give up and that I still have my family beside me no matter what. It still had been a day of torture, sticks have been thrown on me, eyes have been ripped at and my body had been squeezed like a lemon. I screamed with pain, tears rushed down my cheeks like a waterfall and my hands and legs had been killed.

I was sent back to my cage with bruises.

Guards were laughing but, I spoke out, “We are also human, you should stop treating us like dogs and cats. We have rights too.”

No one heard me, I shook my head with disappointment. Before I sat down, I was sucked into my own world, blank just me, myself and I.

Until a strange voice appeared, “Muhammad, are you alright?”

“Yes, who are yo-.”

Before I could finish my sentence, the guy I was talking to was no longer there. My hand slipped into a small crack that became bigger like birds hatching and rain was pouring with anger. I sleep with my hand over my eyes and my legs crossed together. One day, maybe one day, I will get my freedom and talk to all those who have been treated like this.

The hard part about this was coming up with the ideas. I overcame this by just focusing and thinking " What would Muhammad Ali do?".

World Refugee Day

Today is World Refugee day, and I wanted to do something really nice and find information about them. I hope you enjoy and please leave a helpful, thoughtful comment.

Oscar Romero- Report

Oscar Romero was born in South America-Ciudad, El Salvador on August 15th 1917. He was a Catholic priest during the 1960s, but around the 1970s he became Archbishop of El Salvador.  When his friend Rutilio Grande died for standing up for the poor, Oscar Romero had  a conversion of heart and spoke for the poor, poverty and social justice.

After seeing numbers of violations of human rights, he stood up and spoke on behalf of the poor and victims that had been accused. Oscar Romero helped the poor by giving them what he had. He also prayed and organised peace marches and speeches showing that he cared. The government was angry at Oscar Romero because they did not like it when he was spreading the Christian word.Even though he knew that his life was in danger he did not stop defending the troubled.

On March 24th 1980 the people who he angered shot him while he was celebrating Mass. This was in the chapel of the hospital where he lived. His funeral was attended by more than 250,000 people of the world. This turned to violence as the soldiers began to shoot the crowd, killing 40 people. For the people of El Salvador, Romero was a hero, a Christian who was prepared to speak against a bad government and challenge human rights abuses.

As part of our Learning Languages study with Mrs Ashe we needed to

 create a presentation about the country where the language is spoken.

 I have chosen to study Germany because I am a 1/4 German.

The Good Samaritan

The Good Samaritan

As I ride on my donkey I see a wounded man lying on the hard, hot ground. It must be burning his back. As people walk along they look at him. I get off my donkey and go to him. The sun becomes brighter and hotter. I see that his clothes have been teared into pieces. His blood, the colour of fire, and salty sweat drip down his face. He looks at me and just stares. I lift his head and he lies on me. The trees sway from side to side whispering to me. I pour oil and wine to heal his wounds. I carry him onto my donkey and ride away.

My Book Review - GUTS: Gary Paulsen

                                                             
                                                              GUTS
The Title of my chosen book is GUTS written by Gary Paulsen.
This took place around Nature. This book is based on a true story behind the hatchet and Brian's books. Brian is the starring character and an outdoor freak.

Brian is tough and bold, he likes to stay outdoors most of the time and hunt down animals. Brian describes how he makes his bows and arrows and take those who reads this book into a hunting trip showing the nature part along with his hilarious mishaps and mistakes. He shares his memories about how he gets attacked by a mosquito and how he met a moose with sense of humor.

 This book is a must read because there is a lot of violent and inspiring parts that will just make you want to feel emotional. I enjoyed reading this book because it had a lot of scary, violent parts. It felt special to me because it inspired me to not give up on stuff I haven’t tried.

 I'd say this book is suitable for ages 12 years old and over because it may be terrifying for the younger ages.

On Wednesday the 1st of September,  the whole of room 7 and our teacher Miss Goodier jumped on the bus and went to Liggins Institute. We went to the Liggins Institute and we met Chander to learn more about a healthy life and what affects our life around us. We also talked about diet, why because when the scientist tested the rat not long ago, it gave birth to 6 pups. The mother rat was not eating at a healthy diet, so the 6 pups became large (FAT) when they were growing. The test they did was a fair test. These fat pups lost blood pressure when they were growing up.

New Zealand Hauora was about heart disease, that causes death. Every 90 minute a Nzer dies from coronary heart disease because these people have been eating a bad diet. These deaths a preventable. A 12-14 year old has about 4 litres of blood. At Liggins Institute we did activities which was fun. My favorite activity was the end of the day QUIZ. ( I only got 5 right). The biking activity was quite tiring because we had to relax first and then we had to paddle as fast as we can, I nearly lost my breath.

Palm oil

     Palm Oil

Palm oil is from the roots of certain plants especially the west African oil palm. The environmental and social impacts is causing forest conversion, biodiversity loss, soil erosion, air pollution, soil and water pollution and climate change. Palm oil is found in some food and household products. Palm oil is a consumption of vegetable oil from the mesocarp. You will find palm oil mostly in Indonesia.

Orangutans are one of the endangered species because, people are feeding them food that has palm oil and because other people are burning down trees which means that Orangutans have no Habitat. These Orangutans have been feeding on Palm oil. In Sumatra there are less than 6,600 Orangutans but in Borneo there are less than 54, 000 Orangutans. It is that Sumatran Orangutans may be the first to be extinct. Orangutans need these forests for food, water and shelter. In the forests people could leave aluminum that  are actively toxic to any plant not agriculture to the soil. Slash and burn agriculture (cutting down the jungle, burning the plants, then planting things on the ashes) works for a little while.

We all need to focus on what we need to do about the Orangutans and those animals who are endangered. We need to protect their habitats and their future of growing up to a adult.

Gods creation overfishing

Caring for God’s Creation- Overfishing

Overfishing covers the ocean because their biodiversity is unmatched and also contained over 80 percent of all life on Earth, most of it is explored. The ocean is not substantial.

Ecosystem occurs to overfishing when organisms are removed at such a rate. Composition of the ecosystem is often changed and often leads to the system-wide effects. The limit of economy overfishing is denied.

Fishermen overfish and take too many fish out of the sea and that causes a lot of  trouble and pollution. Not much people care but a few do. They wanted to stop the overfishing because they are worried that the sea may be empty by 2048 or 2050. The fishermen use their big or small boats to go out to the sea and catch some fish with their big nets or fishing rods.

The impact on this is horrible because the fish is going to go out of the sea.

Mother's Day Poem

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you clean up the whole house and I learned  that having a tidy house means having a tidy family.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you cared and I wanted to be everything I could.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I heard you say a prayer and I learned that there was a God to talk to and I learned to trust in God.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I felt you kiss me goodnight and I felt loved.

When you thought  wasn’t looking, I saw you take care of our house and those in it, I learned that I have to take care of what we are given.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you make birthday gifts and I learned that I have to be responsible when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you smiled and it made me want to look beautiful too.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you take care of a friend and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw tears come out from your eyes and I learned that it just hurts so bad sometimes.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I looked at you and wanted to say “ Thank you for giving me a life and all the things I saw… When you thought I wasn’t looking”.
